Interior Design, Social Media Influence and Balancing it All….

With the breakdown of IG last week, (I was personally missing for a day and 2 other days I couldn’t comment) there was much ado.  It seemed to be a good time to take a moment to consider all of this social media and working for yourself stuff and talk about how I handle the pressures and stressors that can come from it.

First up, I don’t let anything on social media affect my design decisions.  If I did I would be paralyzed with fear.  And it wouldn’t be me.  I get a lot of positive but you still get the not so positives. You can’t let what other people think of your spaces affect how YOU feel about them.

My thoughts, do your thing.  Whether that’s your design style, clothing style, hair style, etc.  It’s all about perspective.  Have confidence that who you are is the best you, because you’re awesome! (I talk more about confidence in design here)

How do I balance everything?  I have an amazingly supportive husband.  That’s my first and biggest line of defense.  He has been taking over cooking dinners so I can work (and he has only cooked breakfast so that’s been interesting haha), and he supports my crazy ideas and goals.

Then it’s just a matter of prioritizing and allotting time. Mornings are taking my teen to school and then coffee, IG, emails and blog stuff while overseeing 3 younger kids homeschool work.  We finish up and I spend a few hours in the early afternoon with them thrifting, hanging out, grocery shopping (whatever is up that day).  Pick up teen from school, home, put stuff away.  Then work a few more hours until I eat some food at my desk and finish up for the night. I spend a couple of hours with the fam and tuck all the kids in bed before falling asleep by 9:30 on the couch.  Repeat.

Peeps, working for yourself is not for the faint of heart.  I do it because I LOVE it.  It burns like a fire in my mind and heart. Even if I didn’t share I would still be designing.  I can’t sit still in one place, I change things so often because I always want to try something new.

Don’t ever let outside influences or opinions affect your passions.  It doesn’t have to be design either, anything that makes your heart sing is worth following. (read more on my thoughts on this here)

Instagram engagement….aka likes and comments is fickle. It all depends on your content and more importantly the IG algorithm gods liking you that day.  At least that’s all I can figure out. I play with angles to get a picture I like and I focus on sharing posts/captions that make me happy, aka jokes, or real talk about what’s happenin round here.  Some weeks are great and some weeks aren’t, just ride the flow and keep working.  (more on my IG strategy here)

At the end of the day, you got this.  Some days are harder than others, take a breath and let yourself have a moment or even a day off to regroup.

My key tips that I use are:  keep sight of your goals, allow for a break, stay true to yourself and your passion. The rest will come.

How do you handle the pressures of social media?  Are you trying to build a brand or business on IG?  What is your strategy for handling it all?

I always love to hear from ya so hit me up in the comments or feel free to shoot me an email!

And don’t forget to hit up the subscribe box in the sidebar I have some big projects coming up soon (hint one is the Spring ORC!)
