You’ve heard me talk about curating your space. You hear designers and magazines talk about curating your home. But what does it actually MEAN?
Curate is defined by ole trusty Mr. Dictionary as:
select, organize, and look after the items in (a collection or exhibition).
select the performers or performances that will feature in (an arts event or program).“in past years the festival has been curated by the likes of David Bowie”
select, organize, and present (online content, merchandise, information, etc.), typically using professional or expert knowledge.“nearly every major news organization is using Twitter’s new lists feature to curate tweets about the earthquake”
In you and I terms for decor purposes, it means to carefully select, organize and present items or pieces. So why do designers (and myself) always talk about “curating your home?” Because this is how you get the home with personality that speaks to who you are.
What do you think people’s first impression is when they walk into our home? The first thing they notice is loads of color, a mix of styles and all kinds of interesting small accent pieces….. All of those things say something about us.
Here’s the view from our entryway….see those wooden fish chillaxin there on the left?! How about some of those trophies on the top shelf of the built in on the right?
We have carved wooden fish hanging on one wall, my hubs and kids LOVE to fish. We have a plethora of antique books, they represent my love of English lit and antiques. We have some of my husband’s trophies he won as a kid from sports and other events, many of which our kids are now involved in. Color represents happiness and a sense of whimsy and fun, that’s how we live our lives with our family. All of the natural elements represent our love of nature.
This is our office/classroom space, you can see more of it here. Faux greenery with paintings done by a friend, shares our love of the outdoors. The paintings share my love of pieces made by hand and the doors are antiques representing my love of everything old.
You can read more about how you can add personality to your home here. A very simple way to begin curating your home would be to stand in front of your room and say to yourself “what does this room say to people when they come in here?” And “does it accurately portray who we are?” Answering these 2 questions will help you to start thinking in terms of what shows who you are. We want nice AND you! Are you an avid art lover? Displaying some cool art pieces in a gallery wall will share that love!
More of those natural elements in the bed frame and reclaimed wood ceiling of our bedroom (see more here)….Can you tell we love the outdoors?
Not everything needs to be a curated item, some are just fun and beautiful but you def need to have some things that you carefully select to represent you. This mix is what we call “curating your space.” I also want to point out that curating a space takes, and evolves over, time. Our home as you see it didn’t happen overnight but rather over the course of 5-6 years. And it’s always changing! (see exhibit A from the most recent family refresh here)
And here’s a shot of our back patio…..colorful, fun and showing we def don’t take ourselves too seriously!
Now that we have cleared up the confusion of curating, I am going to throw a little challenge at you! I want you to keep your eye out for something, anything that speaks to some part of you. Whether it be a personality trait, hobby or favorite color. And it doesn’t have to be big; a small art print from a flea (see tips on shopping the flea markets here!), cool fly fish hook you can display in a shadow box, fun table accessory, etc. The only requirement is that it has to reflect something about you!!
What’s your favorite way to bring your personality into a space? Is it your fave color? A special collection displayed?
And don’t forget to hit up the teensy subscribe box on the right if you don’t want to miss anything!
