If you have kids and pets in your home you know the messes they can make. Holy mama! So when it becomes that inevitable time to look for some new furniture for your digs you are def going to be wondering what the best upholstery types for children, human and furry alike, are. Look no further friends! I’m here to tell you the best, in my own personal experience as a mom of 4 humans and 4 furries, kinds of upholstery to have for your furniture.
This sofa used to be a linen (so NOT durable) and after a couple of years and several holes I sourced out a top grain leather and had it reupholstered. This thing is indestructible now!
Ok the creme de la creme, def can’t go wrong, so easy to clean it should be illegal……leather. And when I say leather I mean real leather. Is it more expensive? Yes. Is it worth every single dog gone cent of that more expensive? YES! Leather is durable, cleanable, wipe-able, non absorbent, and doesn’t hold on to doggie fuzz/fur like other fabrics.
Be careful when you buy leather, many leather pieces are bonded leather or faux and they won’t be as durable. If you want a piece of furniture that’s leather that will hold up and stand the test of time get genuine top or full grain leather. There are several grades of leather furniture which you can read more about here, but I recommend a good one so you don’t spend $$ on another piece of furniture in 5 years after the abuse of those that reside in the home have done their damage. With that being said we all have a budget and if full/top grain leather is above your range, no worries!!
Isn’t she a beauty?! Made me wonder where can I squeeze another sofa? Goodale Mid-Century Mod Sofa at Wayfair, upholstered in microfiber!
A budget conscious choice is the microfiber. It’s inexpensive and surprisingly durable. The first big piece of furniture we ever bought was a huge corner sectional upholstered in tan microfiber for $800. That sucker was so big it filled an entire room alone and man was it comfy. We had it for 6 1/2 years before we ended up selling it and getting something else. Not because of the upholstery but because the springs had worn out in 2 of the seats from so much use. We had baby spit up, juice, milk, soup and anything else you can think of spill on that sucker and it was all easily cleaned up leaving no stains. You can wash the seat cushion covers and put them back on, voila brand new sofa!
A classic silhouette upholstered in sturdy sunbrella fabric from Wayfair it’s the Lane Venture Colin Sunbrella Sofa
Have you ever considered outdoor fabrics? Shop around and you can find some pretty amazing patterns, colors and textures and although it might seem outside the box it’s incredibly practical. After all it’s made to weather the elements, and let’s be honest, kids are their own weather element.
Ikea’s Kivik Sectional is only $849 with several color slipcovers and easily unzipped washable covers.
And don’t forget about furniture with slipcovers! Ikea is a big one that has a great reputation for style, cleanability and wallet friendliness. Every sofa has cushions that are completely removable which isn’t only great for cleaning up messes BUT you can buy other colors of your sofa’s covers and have a WHOLE new sofa! What’s not to love about that?!
These are definitely my top recommendations for upholstery that will stand up to the torment that is children and pets. Kid tested and mother approved!
What is your fave upholstery for a busy home? Have you had one of these and what did you think was the best? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
