The Christmas decorations come down fairly quickly here.  I feel the need to clean it all up, change things and get it all squared away.  And not only that but this year I had a fun new piece that I was stashing in another room until the trees were down and I could play with it!

So what did this mean?  Mama put together a new look and the only new piece was the pink settee!  So how do you get a fresh look without spending loads of $$$?  Here are my tips!  (and the new setup!)

  1. Move it all around.  This is by far the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to any space to get a new feel.  Take your furniture and reposition it!

Here’s a shot of our family room before (before Christmas, you can see the Christmas set up here!)

Now I loved this look and layout, but a few things I took into consideration were a. the new pink settee and b. this room has only one wall so it’s wide open, which means the hallway to the right and the space behind the sofa are MAJOR traffic ways.  I wanted to figure out a layout that allowed ample room for both of those traffic arteries while providing our family of 6 lots of seating and a conversation inducing furniture configuration.

After some serious playing around with several pieces of furniture (some from other rooms, thanks hubs and teen son!) I decided on this.  I moved our ginormous sofa to the wall (there is a patio door there too just off of the sofa), kept the pink chairs opposite but made them feel proportionate by adding a larger side table in the middle and my new pretty, the pink settee!

It really allows for much more people friendly movement (and when you have 6 peeps and 4 dogs you need ample space to get through)

2.  Use what you already own from elsewhere!! I flipped the vintage rug (read more about it here!) and added cowhides underneath (also already owned) to expand the floor space and make it all flow together visually.  I also added some different pillows, a suzani (read more about what a suzani is here!) and a throw, all from other rooms.

It feels more open and inviting!  And every seat is comfortable and allows more maximum convo and tv exposure while not interfering with the traffic flows.

  3. Mix old and new.  So I mentioned in tip 2 to re-use what you have, steal from other rooms rethink the purpose of things, etc.  This antique victorian settee is my new piece.  The one that spawned the whole re-think it all.  But 1 new piece doesn’t mean everything has to be new.  I put some pillows from my stash on it and a vintage leather pouf I had in here previously.  The solid lamp base is a modern style I picked up at a thrift store for $6 last month.  Put it all together and you have a whole new view.  I busted out my old pillows, pouf, vintage lamp and a settee, badda bing badda boom baby!

Side note:  I’m debating on painting the wood frame white or black….what do you think?  Should I paint it or leave it as is?

 4. Think of different views.  When you are sitting in your space….look around.  Re-think the view you see from your sofa or your chair.  It might spur an idea to move it or change what you see at the end of the room.  Maybe swap out a piece of art or switch your chairs.  Instant update just from looking at it with fresh eyes!

This is the view from the sofa, it spans the hallway and the entryway as well as the chairs.  The black from the hanging suzani ties into the black cowhides and the black in the vintage rug.  Lots going on, but it all works!

My old pal Charlie.  He’s always right where my feet are so I had to sneak a shot of him chillin.

Here’s the opposite view from the pink chairs to the sofa, with the added bonus of Tulip and my knee haha. The lamps flank the sofa, the art on the easel in the corner and the pillows are all working together to bring the drama of the rug up to the furniture.

  5. Add in unexpected touches.  This is an antique easel I found at a flea market months ago and had stashed waiting for the perfect spot.  I put it in the corner here with a piece of original art from Copper Corners (a piece I stole from our schoolroom, see the space here)

Perfect pop of color and life to compliment what’s happening in the main area without being a distraction.

  6. Consider lighting.  These are lamps I picked up at Home Goods, again awhile back, and I only used one until now.  I was able to bust out the second here.  It gives much needed light in the space (unless I want to use the bright overheads, which is almost never) and a nice clean lined modern element amongst the vintage pieces.

I put a simple faux blush pink fur (I stole from the entryway ottoman) over these 2 glass console tables to add texture.  The vintage floral piece in the center ties the painting into the space behind the sofa.

  7.  Think about the details.  The art I have here is the same, but the elephant in the doors and the vintage etched bells draped with it are a swap.  Adding the easel and the art (again both already owned) really gave the corner a pop and a fresh feel too. The saying “the devil is in the details” is absolutely true.  If the only thing you do to freshen up is this, it can STILL make a difference.

There you have it!  The look we are starting off fresh with this year.  It’s more open, bright and inviting.  I achieved this look with one new piece.  The rest are pieces I had around the house in other places or stored in the basement.
